Episode 10 – Shane Bailey (Bmusic Australia)

  • October 29, 2015December 14, 2018
  • by andy

Archived Episode - The Andy Social Podcast - Andy Dowling

Shane Bailey of Bmusic in Adelaide. Shane has been supplying us with music gear and support for over 10 years and is a very close friend of the band. For those who know our love of ESP guitars and basses, Mr Bailey has been instrumental in helping us become endorsees as well as securing our very own E-II signature series axes. The first signature models of that line in Australia.

Fun fact – Bmusic has been Australian ESP Dealer of the Year for the last 10 years straight. Clearly Shane is doing something right!

This is one long episode but is packed with lots of great information for musicians as well as a lot of general chit chat and good takeaways. Sit back, relax and enjoy! Be sure to hit up Shane via his various media platforms and let him know I sent you!

“I suppose I call it, chasing the light.” – Ricky Pfieffer

Ricky is from that little blob known as Tasmania that sits at the bottom of Australia that is often forgotten! I’ve came across Ricky a couple of years back through his band photography as he was shooting for some good friends of mine in metal band Taberah. Always looking to network and be linked in with talented people, I connected with Ricky and it all went from there. Since then I’ve been fascinated with his outlooks on life, his latest endeavours, his passions, struggles and his hopes for the future. I won’t go into a lot more detail as I think its better to listen in.

Of course, I recommend you listen to all of my episodes but I especially recommend you tune into this one if you have struggled with depression or any form of personal challenges (haven’t we all?!). Ricky is a real inspiration and someone that should be modelled for those who are looking to break away from the darkness. Enjoy.

Episode 8 – We’re Gonna Rock America

“Out on the back streets! I hear a heart beat! We’re gonna rock America!”

This episode is a recap of my recent whirlwind trip of the US of A! The trip itself had a specific purpose which I have previously written about here. I’ve tried to keep this as summarised as possible, however as always I do find myself on multiple occasions going off on tangents and repeating myself along the way!

Regardless, I hope you still find it interesting and that you’ll share your own thoughts and experiences, whether tat be travelling in the US, promoting your band/business abroad (or in general!), networking and anything else that you may have taken from the podcast. Enjoy!

Episode 7 – Riju Dasgupta (Albatross)

I’ve known Riju Dasgupta for a few years now. Originally stumbling across each other in the depths of Facebook, telling each other about our bands and comparing our music scenes. Fast forward and I’ve helped his band Albatross tour Australia for the first ever time (one of the first Indian metal bands to ever play in Australia) and kept a strong bond with Riju over the years.

Riju is best known as ‘Dr. Hex’, the bass player for Horror metal band Albatross. In addition, Riju also plays in a Stone Age metal band called Primitiv. Lots of links below to check out!

We have a length chat about metal, life in India, tips on places to go/visit, and poke fun at some of the Indian gods. This was a great chat and I hope you all get something out of it.

A bit of an ‘in between’ episode. This is the first in a series of ‘stories’ from years gone by that I will narrate for your listening pleasure. Please note that these stories are 100% true but I have excluded names for obvious reasons.

This particular story features a tale of beer, an encounter with a local pub patron and an uneasy and disturbing Sunday evening adventure.

Episode 5 – Riley Perry (Shanghai & Mechanical Black)

I was chatting to Tim on a flight back from Perth earlier this year and he suggested I speak with Riley for my upcoming podcast. I’ve known Riley indirectly for years and only bumping into each other at the odd show and exchanging pleasantries. I knew Riley was heavily into the music scene and had been around for a few years, but I was blown away to discover his involvement in quantum computing, and the fact that he had even published a couple of books on the subject.

In our chat, Riley attempts to explain the theory behind quantum computing which (as you will discover) goes right over my head and we also discuss a number of different topics including, but not limited to, his current band Shanghai and even when he suffered a stroke whilst on stage!

w1200_h678_fmaxFeel the heartbreak in my voice as I give a blow by blow description of the night I didn’t get to meet my all-time favourite vocalist.

It has everything. A beginning, middle and even an end.

I recorded this episode on my iPhone headphones whilst driving down to Wollongong for a LORD rehearsal. Yes, the quality isn’t crash hot but it came out a lot better than what I thought. Due to the ease of it, I may use this method for some shorter episodes when I’m out on the road and think of something amusing to talk about.

Episode 3 – Arnie Olbrich (Kickstart Studios and Hard…

A man who is seen by many to be the local legend in Wollongong, Arnie Olbrich has been part of the music scene for the last 4 decades. With stints in bands such as Tree, The Nashville Teens, Masters Apprentices, Billy Ocean’s backing band, and later Hard Grind, Arnie has just about seen it all.

I first met Arnie 10 years ago when Dungeon started rehearsing in Wollongong at Kickstart Studios, run by Arnie. A down to earth, no frills, no bullshit kind of guy who loved a laugh and a chat. Instantly, he made the most nervous feel right at home. Arnie was one of the reasons why we continued to keep coming back when we changed the band over to LORD in 2006 and continued to rehearse there regularly until early 2015 when Arnie made the decision to sell up the business and enjoy some peace and quiet.

This episode is jam packed with lots of stories over the years. His struggles, his opportunities and everything in between. We also talk about the end of Kickstart and what lies ahead now. A lot of laughs and reminiscing along the way. I truly hope you get a kick out of this one.

Lastly, please show your support to Arnie by buying the music he has created through Arnie O Connections. The links are below in the show notes to hear samples of his material as well as some great videos that were put together by Dusk Music Video Production.

Episode 2 – Andrew Craig (Rise of Avernus)

  • September 1, 2015December 14, 2018

Archived Episode - The Andy Social Podcast - Andy Dowling

Band whore extraordinaire, Andrew Craig is well known within the Australian metal scene with his work with various bands over the last several years. Andrew not only is the drummer in Sydney band Rise of Avernus but is also doing a stint with black thrashers Bastardizer, taken on the task of light man for sleepmakeswaves on Australian tours, booking his promotions company and booking own tours for Australian and international acts and funnily enough is also a primary school teacher.

Andrew is one busy guy and never appears to show any signs of stress/insanity along the way. Always with a smile on his face, Andrew simply gets out there and gets the job done. In our casual drunken chat (yes, there were a few beers – probably not the best way to do my first guest podcast episode!), we talk about all the various roles he takes on and how he balances that with his teaching career. We discuss (or dribble) the challenges that he faces as well as the benefits that he’s able to get from both worlds that he lives in. Somehow, Andrew appears to make it all work and continues to help break down the stereotypes associated with the old long haired heavy metal musician!

I hope you enjoy this episode and take my lack of conversation/interviewing skills with a huge grain of salt. I’ve been lucky to know Andrew for quite a few years and I couldn’t think of anyone better to lose my podcast virginity to. I had so much fun that I committed to having him back for episode 600 (lets see if that happens!). Enjoy the slurring and have a laugh!

We all have to start somewhere right? Why not just stumble right into the world of podcasting with a rambling piece trying to work out what on earth this is going to be all about. Sure, I could have placed this at the start of an episode with a bit more ‘substance’, but this way I get an extra episode to look more impressive and who can really guarantee a high level of substance in the future anyway?

Show Notes

Nothing to really note in this episode, however please show your good will by giving me a false start in the podcasting world by giving me a ridiculously over-the-top review and rating on iTunes and whatever platform you use to connect with other humanoids. Hopefully with some unwarranted buzz, we can lure a few more people in!
