Episode 70 – Denis Sudzuka, James Shelverton and Greg…

Brace yourself. If you’re expecting an episode full of deep and intelligent conversation, life lessons and well-articulated English, then this is not the episode for you!

Recorded after quite a few beers, late in the night, towards the end of the Churches of Steel metal festival in Adelaide. I sat down with Denis (Den Den) and James (Shelv0) of Melbourne band metal Espionage as well as front man of Adelaide thrash metal band Alkira, Greg Challis.

Great guys, great beers and plenty of great laughs.

Yes, you will hear slurring, you will hear some rapping and you will certainly hear some attempts at some deep conversation which fall far short of intention at times.

Strong recommendation – Grab yourself an alcoholic beverage, get comfortable and have a laugh at our expense! Once you’re done with us, support the guys buy buying their latest releases, ‘Wings of Thunder‘ (Espionage) and Klotho (Alkira) via the links in the show notes!

Episode 69 – Guy Hedderwick (Adelaide 36ers, Lightning and…

Growing up in the 90s, Basketball was a big part of my life. Of course, the NBA was always the holy grail when it came to the sport, however in Australia the NBL was dominating and the Adelaide 36ers were a team to be feared by many.

I remember growing up with a real fascination for the Adelaide 36ers. The legacy of the team, their vocal home crowd and amazing players such as Darryl Pearce, Brett Maher, Al Green, Mark Davis and many more. It was a team that was constantly feared. Even in 2017, the retains its dominance and is consistently one of the stronger teams in the National Basketball League.

When it came time to look at podcast guests on my recent trip to Adelaide, I knew I had to approach the 36ers and instead of the obvious choice of speaking with one of the current players, I decided to instead speak to current CEO, Guy Hedderwick.

Guy has been CEO of the Adelaide 36ers, Adelaide Lightning and Titanium Security Arena since 2013. Guy has a long history in sports and venue management, not only here in Australia but also South Africa.

We sat down for a very quick chat about his role in the organisation, his background and earlier beginnings as well as some of his driving motivators behind the business.

Christian and his wife Connie are the Directors and Owners of ARMI Australian Rock & Metal Institute. A music school dedicated to teaching people of all ages, the rock and metal perspective when it comes to music performance and education.

They have both successfully built a business that not only sees hundreds of students visit from all over South Australia but also attracts a number of national and international artists that perform and run masterclasses in their studios.

With the business now hitting capacity, ARMI are looking to expand. At the moment, the possibilities appear to be many and exciting.

Christian and I sat down for a beer at ARMI headquarters in Adelaide and spoke about the success of their business. In addition, their giving back and helping the next generation of young music fans as well as catering to people of all walks of life who have an underlying passion playing music.

Even if you’re not a fan of heavier music, this is a great conversation and an example of an amazing business that is continuously giving back to help others.

Alison Oborn Adelaide's Haunted Horizons - The Andy Social Podcast Podcast

Episode 67 – Alison Oborn (Adelaide’s Haunted Horizons)

  • March 2, 2017June 16, 2019
  • by andy

What do you do on a Friday night in Adelaide? You go and hang out at Glenside: Z Ward. One of Adelaide’s most notorious landmarks for housing the (once referred to as) ‘Criminally Insane’, of course!

Alison Oborn (Author, Radio Personality and Paranormal Researcher) of Adelaide’s Haunted Horizons was kind of enough to not only show me around this amazing building and share it’s history, but also talk about her career in documenting the local history in Adelaide, tour guide operation and her fascination and research in the paranormal field.

This was recorded late on a Friday night in Glenside: Z Ward itself with no one else in the building (hint – or so we thought!). Despite the Asylum being closed since the 70s, the building is still telling stories even to this day, demonstrating it’s importance in Adelaide’s recent history.

It also highlights just how far we’ve come in only a matter of decades when it comes to the approach we take to mental health!

This chat was a lot of fun and being in Z Ward itself for the podcast added an extra element of excitement to our conversation. I hope you all enjoy!

Episode 66 – Pod Kembla and Cocoon Floatation

I’ve been preaching the wonders of Floatation Therapy for the past few years, however only recently have I actually dipped my toe in to experience it for myself (what a poser!). Enter Cocoon Floatation.

I went for my second ever float at Cocoon Floatation in Wollongong with Kurt from the infamous Pod Kembla podcast (Check it out here!).

For something different, we did pre and post float episodes. I’ve released our pre-float chat while Kurt has put out the post-float chat over at Pod Kembla. I highly recommend that you head over to listen to the follow up episode here.

Enjoy and for those who live in Sydney or the South Coast, I highly recommend visiting Cocoon! The first of many visits to come, I’m sure.

Episode 64 – Joel McDonald (Rose Tattoo and Frankie’s…

  • February 7, 2017June 16, 2019
  • by andy

It’s Monday afternoon in Sydney. You’ve just finished your first day of work for the week and you’re already over it! You’re fantasising about the weekend. Beers and live music… mmm yes, but it seems like a lifetime away.

Luckily you don’t have to wait until Friday to get your fix!

Joel McDonald and his Frankie’s World Famous House Band have been playing at Frankie’s Pizza by the Slice every Monday night for several years now and have become one of Sydney’s best live bands. Not only can they pull a crowd on a Monday night (almost impossible anywhere else in this city!), but they are a magnet for some of the world’s greatest rock musicians who often stop in and get up on stage to jam with Joel and his band. These guys have a reputation!

Joel has been in the Sydney live music scene for over a decade, not only doing the Frankie’s gig but performing with some of Australia’s legends of rock across the country. Joel’s currently playing with Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo supporting Guns n Roses on their 2017 Australian tour. Not bad hey?

Joel and I talk about his approach to networking in the music world, his dedication and love for playing as well as some of those ‘pinch yourself’ moments that he’s had with some of the world’s best musicians.

If you enjoy this one, make sure you drop by Frankie’s on a Monday night (or yell out from the crowd at some stadium he’s playing in) and say hi!

Episode 63 – Tony Barber (Australian Television Personality)

  • February 2, 2017June 16, 2019
  • by andy

Tony Barber. Yes, that is correct. The Gold Logie winning Australian television personality, Tony is seen as a cultural icon for many Australian’s growing up over the last several decades.

Best known for the host of iconic game shows such as Sale of the Century (the first country to air it!), Great Temptation and Family Feud, Tony has graced millions of family lounge rooms across the country.

In addition to his television work, Tony spent a number of years as a singer/on stage performer as well as a radio host on several stations throughout his career. The versatility that he has ensured his longevity over 5 decades.

This was something special for me. A conversation that I’ve been looking to do for over 12 months and finally made it happen. Tony and I talk about his origins of migrating from Northern England to Perth in the late 40s, struggles that other migrants faced at the time. We touched on the skills and qualities that he developed in his formative years and how he had to stay flexible as his work environments changed throughout the years. We also reflected on the wonders of social media, writing and giving back.

I know I always say it, but easily one of the best conversations I’ve had. This podcasting stuff is fun.

It all started with a mutual love for 90s NBA and soon blossomed into a big old bromance.

When you have a guy who hosts his own academia podcast (Univi Podcast), is currently filming a documentary about the NBL and plays in a Viking Metal band, its almost guaranteed that I’m going to have a pretty entertaining conversation.

Simon and I talk all things podcasting, basketball, 90s music and spend quite a bit of time reflecting on some of those big existential questions that we all face in life. Yes, we go off in a number of directions and have a great time doing so.

Be sure to check out Simon’s projects via the links below and say hi!

Old mate Jason is the front man of Adelaide’s Truth Corroded. One of my favourite Australian metal bands who LORD have been fortunate enough to not only play a number of shows together across the country, but also tour together in Japan back in 2009. Heaps of great memories!

Jason has been heavily involved in Adelaide’s heavy music scene for quite a number of years, being a main point of contact and promoter for many interstate and international bands who come through town. On top of that, Jason has been behind a number of metal festivals in the City of Churches, including the previous Against the Gain, and now The New Dead Festival and Heavy SA fest.

In episode 61 of The Andy Social Podcast, Jason and I get chatting about touring Asia, in particular the pioneering that Truth Corroded has done for many heavy Australian bands in countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong China, Vietnam, Thailand and more. We also talk about upcoming Truth Corroded news, their label Truth Inc and future plans for The New Dead Festival and Heavy SA fest.

Lots of fun stories, some great insights for those musicians looking to venture into the Asian market and much more.

Support Jason and Truth Corroded by visiting the links in the show notes and grabbing some music/merch if you dig the music!
